Looking at the picturesque coast of Sorrento, it is hard to believe that these beauties are of natural origin: rocks of bizarre shapes, fragrant citrus trees, a warm sea playing with sapphire and turquoise hues, and sparkling southern sun. Fort Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Sri Lanka’s main attractions. The construction has an ancient and interesting history.
It is not possible to find out the exact date of construction of the fortification walls and towers. It is believed that the first fortress was built by the Arabs 2000 years ago, then in 1588 the Portuguese rebuilt it, who arrived on the island in search of new trade opportunities, in the 17th century the Dutch forced them to declare Sri Lanka their colony.
