Bay of Panormo, Crete

Panormo is a miniature village located just 22 km from Rethymno and 55 km from Heraklion, on the picturesque coast of the Cretan Sea. Unlike most Greek resorts, which are a long strip of the same type of hotels, between which are souvenir shops, restaurants, cafes and other necessary elements of tourist infrastructure, Panormo is a “natural” organism. In attractive bleached houses, there is already not the first generation of colorful residents who will never change the measured way of life for the bustle of megacities. By the way, the permanent population of the village does not exceed 800 people.

Panormo began to develop as a resort relatively recently, and therefore did not lose its rural charm. Walking along the narrow cobbled streets, and then relaxing in the shade of grapes, enjoying a cold drink in the air, is a special pleasure.

PANORMO BAY
Bay of Panormo

Both adults and children will like it here. From Greek “panormo” translates “harbor with a quiet sea”, and that’s it. In addition to the natural landscape, which guarantees a calm swim, breakwaters provide additional comfort.

A gentle descent to the entrance, a shallow bottom, thanks to which the crystal water warms up well, and the purest soft sand – all that is needed for a relaxing family vacation.

The coastline is well equipped. It offers tourists toilets, changing cabins, as well as umbrellas and sun loungers, available for rent at 6 € per set (2 sun loungers + 1 umbrella) for the whole day. Some sections of the coast are assigned to beach cafes. If you make an order for them in the amount of 6 € or more, you get the attributes of a comfortable stay for free.

The safety of bathers is vigilantly watched by rescuers. A special pride of the beaches is the “Blue Flag”. It is the highest environmental award in Europe.

BEACH PANORMO

The village has 2 municipal sandy beaches and a few more pebble beaches in the surrounding area. Some belong to nearby hotels.

Limanaki
Limanaki beach

It is the largest beach. “Limanaki” in Greek means “port”. The natural harbor is protected by a cape and a small marina. Sunbathing and swimming here is a pleasure. The water is clean and clear, so you should take fins and a mask with you. To get to the beach, you have to go down the stairs. Walking in the shade of sprawling trees will not be tiring.

Second beach
This bathing and sunbathing area is located about 200 m west of the village. The second beach differs from Limanaki only in size. It is also protected by a cape, covered with sand and has a comfortable entry into the sea.

BEACHES NEAR PANORMO
If you want complete privacy, do not be too lazy to go beyond the borders of the village. There are only a few umbrellas and sun loungers on Maliu Ryaki beach, a small bay with a pebble beach surrounded by cliffs and caves.

A natural arch in a rock at the western end of the coast is a visiting card of Kamara Beach.

Geropotamos beach is named after the river, which flows into the sea from the surrounding mountains here, which is why the water here is somewhat colder. There is a small lake nearby.

At Cape Llanos there are 2 artificial bays, created specifically for the needs of guests of a fashionable hotel. Recreation areas are completely isolated from waves and winds. Everyone is allowed on the beaches.

Skepasta beach is absolutely wild, without infrastructure, so tourists there are very rare. The lack of civilization is compensated by beautiful views and a clean sea.

There is a taxi from the airport to Panormno. The trip will cost about 80 €. Travel time is about an hour.

From Heraklion
The next stage of the trip is to get to the bus station. To do this, take bus number 1 or 78K, which goes to bus station A (there are 3 bus stations in Heraklion). It is located in the old part of the city, near the Agora market. You need a local KTEL carrier.
