Troodos Mountains

Troodos is a mountain resort region in Cyprus and the only place in the country where it snows. From October to March, majestic peaks, including the highest peak Olympos (1952 m), are covered with a white veil.

The Troodos Mountains formed over 70 million years ago. On its slopes there are picturesque villages adjacent to the ruins of temples and ancient monasteries that arose in the Byzantine era.

In winter, the resort is occupied by skiers, in summer, cool valleys save from the scorching heat. Local forests have been declared a nature reserve where centuries-old oaks, pines, junipers, cypresses, strawberries and cedars grow – according to scientists, the age of some specimens exceeded 800 years. Clean healing air and natural beauty attract tourists who like to go hiking. Routes and hiking trails of varying difficulty have been developed for them.

CLIMATE
Troodos

Troodos, like the rest of Cyprus, is dominated by a Mediterranean climate. However, because of the mountains, which are a natural obstacle to the movement of air masses, more precipitation falls in the local regions in winter and 10-15 ° C in summer. less compared to the flat part of the country. In winter it snows steadily. The average summer temperature is + 23-25 ° C, winter -10 ° C.

MOSAIC VILLAGES
A village in the mountains of Toodos

The settlements in this area are not inferior in attractiveness to the famous Cypriot attractions. Miniature villages seemed to have come down from brochures or postcards: stone houses under terracotta roofs, an abundance of greenery and winding narrow roads, along which donkeys, transported by a simple scarlet, slowly walk.

Each Troodos village is famous for some kind of craft or specializes in the cultivation of certain fruits and vegetables.

Omodos
The miniature village is famous for its natural beauties. Its narrow streets are always full of curious tourists who are not tired of taking selfies on the background of old buildings. Local craftswomen offer to buy products with national embroidery, as well as a variety of handmade glass products.

The main pride of Omodos is delicious jams and jams. The main ingredients are tangerines, kumquat, nuts, figs and dates.

The local winery is famous throughout Cyprus. Here the brands Herolimo, Linos, Marion are produced. These wines in small quantities are even exported. Everyone can visit the factory and see the process of making alcoholic beverages.

In the center of the village is the Museum of Socrates, which presents the interior of a typical Cypriot village household.

Lefkara

Craftswomen live in this village, who manually weave the finest lace with complex patterns and make the famous Lefkaria embroidery – geometrically regular patterns do not have straight lines. Local crafts have long become a brand and are known throughout the world. Such products are very expensive.

Lefkara also makes silver objects – from pendants and earrings to trays and dishes. They are sold in shops at small workshops. Bargaining is appropriate.

The religious life of the settlement is determined by the Toy Church Timiou Stavrow, built in the 18th century. It is decorated with a carved iconostasis and a silver cross.

Agros
The village lies in the east of the Troodos ridge. Fans of hiking will enjoy it here, all the more the beauty of the area is conducive to long exercises.

Agros is buried in roses, in addition to aesthetic value, these flowers have a purely practical purpose. Almost every house has a distillation cube, with the help of which rose water is obtained. It is widely used in cooking, cosmetology, in addition, wine and liqueurs are produced on the basis of aromatic liquid. Alcohol products are packaged in glass or ceramic containers. A better presentation from a trip to Cyprus is simply not to be found.

If you want to familiarize yourself with the details of the process of making rose water, go to a private mini-factory with a regular tour. The desired product there can be purchased at a significant discount.

Residents of Agros love a hearty meal. In the center of the village there are several butcher shops selling smoked and cured meat cooked with spices. Seductive aromas stimulate appetite. You should not suppress it, local delicacies are very tasty.

Cacopetria
On the shady, lush green streets of this village, coolness always reigns. Small colorful hotels offer a measured rest, family restaurants offer delicious dishes of juicy meat and fish, caught in the purest mountain streams. The abundance of vegetables on the plate will not cause a feeling of heaviness even after a hearty meal.

There is a peculiar attraction in the village – a “bad stone”. It was he who gave the name to the settlement. Legend has it that a guy and a girl who decide to marry must walk around a stone so that family life is happy. Once a young couple, having performed such a ritual, fell dead for an unknown reason.

You should definitely visit the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, built in the 9th century.
